Shop Interview: Goodtimes

Tuesday, Apr 4, 2006 · Garry

Shop name: Goodtimes Skate Shop
Year shop opened: 1986
Owner’s name: Brad Block
Your name and job title: Jovan Giles, Manager / Skate Team Manager
Address: 34291 Doheny Park Road, Capistrano Beach, California 92674
Phone: (949) 493-2223
Shop hours: Monday-Friday 11:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m., Sunday 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

How’s the shop doing?
Really great! There’s so much happening right now, definitely cool stuff! We’re almost finished with our remodel. Our shop has been the same way seven years, so we were definitely due for some changes. We have bunch of new great brands coming in, especially the core skate brands, since they know we are dedicated to skate only! We’re just trying to live up to the expectations that the previous owner, Nancy McAtee, had. She passed away in 2005 after battling cancer the past few years. Nancy was great with the kids in all the local schools and contests, etc. for 20 years!

Who is your typical customer?
Well, definitely and foremost, skaters across the board–from young newbies getting their first boards to core kids and even old school poolboard guys from the ’80s and ’90s. We carry a grip of old school boards! Also, we get some moms and pops on the weekends, tourists who come in for shorts, sunglasses, etc. and core kids who skate in to hang out, watch videos and play Playstation.

Do you have any interesting shoplifting stories?
Not too many we can talk about. The boss is originally from New York City, so though we’re all about love, we don’t like to be disrespected. We’ll just leave it at that!

Do you get any crazy people coming in off the street?
Wow, a lot. We’re right off of Pacific Coast Highway on the beach, so we get a bunch of bums, winos and homeless people. You can see quite a few of them rocking Goodtimes gear under the freeways!

Name the most popular skate videos currently playing in the shop.
Enjoy’s Bag of Suck, Baker’s Baker 3, DVS’s Skate More and Jack Vejvoda’s demo.

Do you do any special events like video premieres, signings or demos?
Tony Alva came in a few weeks ago to promote his reissue tri-logo board. Local Ryan Sheckler’s supposed to be in for a signing soon, as well.

Do you have any future events coming up?
We’re doing a battle of the shops contest in May. Also, we have kids doing CASL events, and we help Alva sponsor the San Clemente City Championships at San Clemente skatepark every year. We’re also working on the first-ever Goodtimes video highlighting top orange county riders. Send your videos in!

Are there any skateparks near your shop?
San Clemente and Ladera are the closest. It seems like a lot of kids these days travel to other areas to try out new parks, stairs or rails they haven’t skated before, and since we’re literally 30 seconds off the 5 freeway in between San Diego and Orange
County, we get quite a few people from those places who like a really great selection of skateboards and gear in general.

Who are your shop team riders?
Donny Duhadaway, Jack Vejvoda, Shane Rueweler, Robby Joseph, Brandon Turner, Robert “Zoid” Baltierra and Jake Warren, plus a bunch of B team riders who get flow, discounts , etc. You know who you are!

Do you have any shop team riders who are flowed by éS sales reps or team flow?
Team BK kicks down some shoes to Jack Vevjoda and a couple others, but we’re looking for more. What’s up? The manager needs some new kicks!

What’s the best part of running a skate shop?
It’s got to be the kids! It’s such a high to see them discovering skateboarding for the first time and watching them develop over the years. As far as the junior high, high school, and older skaters go, well, Goodtimes is the “barbershop” of the 2000s! We really hear it all. This place is definitely the heartbeat of the community!

Which éS shoes sell the best in your shop?
The Accel Plus, the Accel and the K7. The System G2™ technology is insane. If you haven’t tried it, do it now.

What’s the best part about éS?
There’s a definite fashion sense to éS…style plus tech.

Im glad es isn’t tech anymore. They are to hard to break in. One tech shoe every now and then is nice but they used to be hardcore tech. This shop is so better than my local one.

ToNyXeS sounds mad but he is rational. If sounds negative is cause the way eS took the cruise is kinda weird if you look at their past.

Talk about the skateshop.

I like how that shop uses lime green on their walls. My shop just has a lame color on the whole thing haha.

You can talking about tech shoes and creative innovating design when you’re talking about K2, K3, Diode, EOS, K5 …

gary or Josh P. you should really interview ig boardingshop in Simi Valley, they have some great riders like Mike Taylor, Mikemo Cpaldi, Josh Segal, Van Wastell, and Nigel Alexander. You should do an interview on them. I think Mike Barker is on their team too….
