Interview 2006
How and when did you start skating?
I started skating because my bike got stolen. That was in 1995.
Who were you skating with at first?
A few friends from school.
What terrain were you riding at first?
Ledges.
Who were some early influences on your skating?
Rene Matheysen, Ceasar Singh, Drake Jones and Jovonte Turner’s 360 flip over a bench in Goldfish.
Do you enjoy skating in contests?
I don’t know. I’ve only skated in one.
How could contests be improved?
Don’t let Greg Lutzka snap his fingers in celebration after he lands a trick.
What is good / bad about being a pro?
The good is the freedom to skate all the time. The bad is having to skate all the time.
What do you think of skate videos?
I don’t watch or care about videos like I used to, but there are still some good ones being made.
Which are your favorites?
20 Shot Sequence, Goldfish, Mouse, Children of the Sun. Most of the TransWorld videos are some of my favorites, as well.
Do you enjoy shooting video parts?
Not until the second they are done.
Do you skate small stuff like curbs and parking bumps?
Yes and yes.
Do you skate vert ramps?
No, but every chance I get, I’ll pump around on one.
Do you session backyard pools?
No.
What do you think of public concrete skateparks?
I think they’re good, especially if they’re designed well.
How could they improve the design?
Nothing too small or too big.
Should skateparks copy real street spots like Love Park and EMB?
Not exactly, because that just seems generic. But they could definitely take things from those places.
How did you get on éS?
They asked, “Do you want ride for us?” and I said, “YéS!”
What do you like about éS?
Silas, Scuba and Raymond.
Who do you skate with now?
Myself… and an iPod™.
Who are your favorite skaters of all time?
The same guys who influenced me early on.
What have been the highlights of your skateboarding career?
Some of the people that I’ve met through skateboarding.
Is there anything in skateboarding you haven’t done that you’d like to accomplish?
Yeah, get a sports drink or sunglasses sponsor.
What do you enjoy besides skating?
Music.
What music, art and books have you been enjoying lately?
I’ve been listening to Leonard Cohen’s “Songs From A Room.”
What are your future goals?
To get some future goals.
